Red Ribbon Week brings awareness to the effects of drugs, alcohol, and nicotine, and promotes a safer, healthier community. Partnership in Action for Trinity Health (PATH) coalition members Human Response Network (HRN) and Trinity County Office of Education (TCOE) kicked off Red Ribbon Week 2024 by announcing the winners of the annual Red Ribbon Week poster contest and the many school activities. Schools participate in activities to take a unified stand against drug and nicotine use and pledge a drug-free life.
The top three winners were: in first place, Brooklyn, 7th grade, from Hayfork Elementary School, receiving a $100 gift card; in second place, Mattie, 7th grade, from Douglas City School, receiving a $50 gift card; and in third place, Sydney, age 13, from Weaverville Elementary School, receiving a $20 gift card.
Eighty three students illustrated this year’s theme “Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free” in the annual poster contest held for 6th through 8th graders in Trinity County. All participants received a $5 gift certificate to Up North Confectionary and Mercantile or a gift certificate to the Family Dairy Store in Hayfork. All posters submitted were display in the windows of the Weaverville and Hayfork businesses during Red Ribbon Week, October 23rd through the 31st. Posters submitted by students under 6th grade were also on display at Mountain Goat Kids in Weaverville.
We want to thank PATH and TCOE staff members who had the difficult choice of narrowing down the entrants to the top ten out of 83 posters submitted. Many thanks also go out to the official judges for the top 10 posters including the following community leaders: Ric Leutwyler, Supervisor, District 1; Jill Cox, Supervisor, District 2; and Liam Gogan, Supervisor, District 3; Wayne Agner, Editor, Trinity Journal; Diana Stewart , Hayfork Rotary Club Member; Therese Burns, Host of Hayfork Gather & Exchange; Todd Corbett, Chief, Weaverville Fire Department; Elizabeth Hamilton, Director, Health and Human Services; and Kristy Anderson, Director, Environmental Health.
